The Foothill Conservancy has been working with the community alongside our unhoused neighbors in an effort to clean up local homeless encampments along waterways. Some of these sites are occupied and some have been vacated by the time we arrive. We have an ongoing partnership with several encampments. At those sites we provide garbage bags and the residents fill those bags with debris. Once they fill the bags they leave them at an agreed upon location and we at the Conservancy pick them up and transport them to the dump.
At the abandoned sites we work to remove all remaining debris left by the campers. ACES Services, Inc. provides us with dumpsters and charges the Conservancy only for the tonnage we collect. These sites have all been located adjacent to local waterways. The Foothill Conservancy has a long history of local stream preservation and our encampment cleanups are an extension of this commitment.
Our encampment cleanups help ensure clean water for the entire community. It’s a win win for everyone involved. To date we have cleaned up five sites and continue to maintain two encampments.
We need volunteers for our next two cleanups near Walmart on Wicklow Way. Please help us on March 6 and March 20 from 10:00 to 1:00. We will meet at the dumpster across from the Walmart parking lot. Wear sturdy shoes and gloves. For more information call the Foothill Conservancy at 209-223-3508 or send us an email.
